Another victory for Iraq
Iraq's soccer team won again last night! To the people here, it's incredible. But they sure do have a funny way of celebrating. The other night after their victory over Portugal, the whole city here came out into the streets and started shooting in the air. Celebratory gunfire is normal around here, it happens at weddings and other special events, but with so many people shooting in the streets, we didn't really understand at first the other day what was happening. Last night however, we were prepared. Everyone came outside, shot their rifles and flares, and though it's a scary thought that people celebrate like that, it's good that they have something to celebrate these days.
I really think soccer is going to be one of the things that brings Iraq together. It's not just the olympics, everyone here loves it. You can see kids playing soccer everywhere here. It's a small thing they can do, but I think it helps to get them thinking about something other than the fighting for just a little while.
The Olympics was a huge victory from Iraq, but the fact that kids are out playing may be a bigger victory.
