Violence in the streets

One of the things I can’t get used to here is how Iraqis have become accustomed to the violence that pervades their country. Maybe it’s because I’m from a country where people don’t blatantly display their weapons when they walk down the street. It amazes me that there are armed police on every corner with loaded AK-47’s and people pass them by without even a second glance. We drive down the highway, weapons locked loaded and pointed out and people aren’t scared, hell, most of them don’t even move out of the way anymore. Even when Soldiers go on patrols through the city or raid homes of suspected terrorists, nobody gets concerned or scared (unless it’s their home you’re coming into) With all the violence on the streets, Iraqi people have become almost immune to the danger that waits for them at every turn. I guess after years of war, you get used to it, but it’s beyond anything that I can fathom. In a society where not only is everyone allowed to have a semi-automatic rifle, but the own them, know how to use them and it doesn’t bother them, it freaks me out. I know people should be concerned for their safety now, but what happens when the violence is over? Or will the violence ever stop when violence seems to be all they know?
