Mosul: Car bomb capital of Iraq
How do you stop someone who is intent on killing themselves for a cause? How do you fight against someone who doesn’t care if he dies? How do you stop a car bomb from coming at you when it looks just like every other car on the road?
The answer is, you don’t. And it’s frustrating as hell. When an explosion goes off and hurts people, there’s no one there to blame, no one to retaliate against most of the time. The suicide bomber has usually disintegrated and the people who detonate explosives on the roadsides don’t stick around to let you shoot back.
People die. And it’s just so random. Explosions are indiscriminate. It doesn’t matter if you’re just about ready to go home or if you just got here. It doesn’t matter if your wife just had a baby or you just got married. They don’t care if you’re an infantryman or a desk jockey. Everyone is a target.
In the last week, there have been three deaths from car bombs and many, many more wounded. One of those who died was going home in two weeks, the others just arrived. I can’t imagine spending 11 ½ months here, only to die two weeks before coming home.
When we interview commanders and leaders and ask them what they would say to the families of Soldiers killed to honor their sacrifice, they’ll say something like, we’re going to complete the mission and bring everybody home, but really what do you say? How can you justify to a family that has just lost someone that their death was for a just cause?

For the suicide bombers, I never figured why they do it. They're definitely brainwashed.
